Job Description:

Network Engineer

  • The incumbent will be responsible for:
    • The specification, design, procurement, installation, configuration, documentation, monitoring and control, maintenance, and repair of the network systems used to connect the various components of the LMR communications systems
    • Ensuring the network supports the mission critical needs of the LMR communications systems users, while also supporting less critical video and administrative functions
    • Ensuring the network always remains operational by making it as diverse, redundant, resilient, and self-healing as possible
    • Maintaining information about the network systems, including network diagrams, internet protocol (IP) subnet plans, virtual local area network (VLAN) plans, and network device configuration documentation and files
    • Implementing monitoring and control systems to ensure the status of the network is known, performance can be monitored, and problems can be resolved
    • To perform these duties, the incumbent should be familiar with:
      • Wireless microwave communications systems of various manufacturers, including those that are time-division multiplexed (TDM) and internet protocol (IP) based
      • Wireless microwave design and propagation in various radio frequency bands between 900 MHz and 23 GHz
      • Internet protocol (IP) based network systems and components, including open systems interconnection (OSI) layer 3 network routers, OSI layer 2 network switches, and multiprotocol label switched (MPLS) systems
      • Computer network quality of service (QoS), including differentiated services code point (DSCP) and VLAN IEEE 802.1q priority markings
      • Computing servers of various manufacturers, including storage arrays
      • Virtualized environments, including hardware, operating system, desktop, and application-based systems Network Operations Coordinator
        • The incumbent will be responsible for:
          • Providing technical support to end users and service personnel of the LMR communications systems
          • Receiving and logging requests for assistance, and either handling them directly or referring those requests to other responsible parties
          • Checking the network's monitoring and control systems to ensure the LMR communications systems remain operational, and any problems are identified and remedied
          • Acts as the liaison to coordinate the work of the service teams responsible for maintaining the LMR communications systems
          • Deploying LMR communications systems components to support mission critical on-demand and emergency operations, such as mobile command posts, emergency communications restoration vehicles and towers, and portable dispatch equipment
          • To perform these duties, the incumbent should be familiar with:
            • The operation of conventional and trunked LMR communications systems
            • LMR communications system subscribers, including mobile and portable radios from various manufacturers, including the installation, configuration, and use of subscribers
            • LMR communications system infrastructure, including antenna systems, backhaul systems, base stations, controllers, comparators, and dispatch consoles
            • Additional equipment required to support mission critical LMR communications systems, including uninterruptable power supplies (UPS), direct current (DC) battery plants and rectifiers, emergency standby power generators (propane and diesel), and heating, ventilation, and air control systems

              Qualifications:
              First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

              Minimum Entrance Requirements:

              Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in electrical engineering work of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

              Substitutions:

              I. An Associate's degree with a major in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*

              II A Bachelor's degree with a major in electrical engineering may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*

              III. A Graduate degree with a major in electrical engineering may be substituted for the required experience.*

              *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

              SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
